About the role

Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Sort & Pricing and working as part of the Donation Centre team, the Sort Team Lead is responsible for ensuring the effective management of donations from individual and retail donors by sorting, grading, distributing, recycling, and storing of donated goods on a daily basis. The Sort Team Lead enhances WINS’ contribution to the community by providing excellent support to customers (through Twice New and More Store by WINS), donors, and volunteers at the WINS Donation Centre.

Team Leadership & Daily Coordination

Assist and coordinate with the Manager, Sort & Pricing in managing the teams activities and tasks each shift. Monitor teams work habits, effectiveness and skill level in making necessary change or encouragement. Assist the Manager in training the team using WINS quality of standards. Mentor and act as a role model for team members while working alongside them. Assist the Manager in managing timed activities, such as teams’ breaks, travel, pick-up and drop-off as well as start and end times for each shift. Manage all tasks related to the team in the absence of the Assistant Manager and or Manager. Provide assistance and support to other departments as needed.

Sorting & Storing

Efficiently & consistently sort and grade previously rough-sorted donations to determine the quality and most appropriate path for each item (ex: for thrift stores, Twice New e-commerce, More Store by WINS, seasonal, recycle, or disposal). Refine sorted goods into specific product categories (ex: commodity) and load into bins for holding/storage. Share expertise as required with other staff and volunteers regarding the quality of donations (grading).

Recycle

Recognize product suitable for recycle, salvaging all possible product to divert it from landfill, reduce WINS’ environmental imprint’ and build WINS recycle revenue.

Retail & E-commerce

Supply the More Store by WINS with product from the sort area; remove dated product from the More Store divert to recycle. Process sales transactions as point of sale (POS) in an accurate and efficient manner. Provide friendly, positive, professional service to customers of the More Store by WINS. Support Twice New e-commerce with ensuring suitable product availability from donations.

Teamwork

Act as an ambassador for WINS both on and off the job. Maintain excellent donor, employee, and volunteer relations through positive, kind, and professional interactions with others. Engage and support individual and corporate group volunteers to ensure that their experience is fun and rewarding. Maintain ongoing communication with management on any issues or concerns.

Health & Safety and Industrial Hygiene

Positively engage in and comply with all WINS health & safety practices, procedures, and policies. Maintain a safe working area for all employees, volunteers, clients, and customers by ensuring workstations and aisles are clean, tidy, and clear of clutter.

Requirements & Education

Must be legally eligible to work in Canada An understanding of and affinity for the WINS brand, mission, and role with our clients, customers, volunteers, donors, and community. Grade 12 education, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Solid organization skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment. Effective communication skills including proficiency in verbal and written English. Basic numeracy is required to keep counts and operate point of sale equipment. A welcoming and empathetic demeanor with an ability to build and maintain positive relationships with other employees and individual & corporate volunteers. Excellent customer service orientation. Flexibility to comply with a work schedule with shifts throughout the week (Monday-Sunday 7:30AM-4:30PM). Able to stand for long periods of time. Able to correctly and safely lift a minimum of 50lbs/23kg individually, and 100lbs/45kg as part of a team. Work-ready with CSA approved steel-toed safety.
